Event: Independent Publishers: From Whitman to the World Wide Web
Award winning poet and professor of Contemporary Literature at The University of Nebraska, Miles Waggener will moderate and lead a discussion tracing the history of independent publishing in the United States. Starting with a discussion of Walt Whitman’s bold self-publishing and public positioning; then examining post-World War II presses such as City Lights and Black Sparrow Press, he will set the scene for exploring the role of the independent publisher in today’s literary climate. Featured panelists will include the editor, Thor Nolen, from Two Dogs Press; Todd Taylor of Gorsky Press and Razorcake magazine; Rachel Yoder from Alligator Juniper; and writer and poet, Lois Roma-Deeley.

Event: Poetry, Pop Culture, and the Sensibilities of Satire Literature: Twain, Wilde, and Who is
This Jon Stewart Fellow?
Tom Carpenter, Essayist and Humor Writer, will moderate a panel discussion examining the various roles of satire writers and their relationship to the society’s dominant paradigm and authoritative figures. Particular authors to be discussed will include Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde. Also, contemporary humor writers will share their views and how they see their position as writer and satirist in today’s society. Panelists will include Peter Christensen, Tim Seibles, Martin Sommerness, and Kelly Poe Wilson.

Event: Writers of Regions: Readings by Rose Houk, Scott Thybony, Michael Wolcott
Freelance writer and editor specializing in Natural History, History, and Archaeology, Rose Houk (author of The Walker Sisters of Little Greenbrier) will read her latest. A former river guide and archaeologist, Scott Thybony (author of Burntwater) has traveled throughout North America; these travels have resulted in numerous award-winning articles. He will read from his latest work. Michael Wolcott has written essays and stories for High Country News, Mountain Gazette, Earth First! Journal, and appeared on Arizona Public Radio. “Notes from the Edge” is his regular column for FlagLive. Currently, he is working on a book called Switchbacks, and will read from his new work.

Event: The Marxist, the Communist, and the Cowboy: Populist Trends in the Literature of the American West
New Historicist, Sean Carswell; cowboy poet and folklore expert, Tony Norris; and novelist and screenplay writer, Anthony de la Garza, will discuss how various philosophies have shaped the ways readers think about the Literature of the American West. From the way the reader approaches the texts, to the roles Western writers find themselves playing, to the very way books are printed, the panel will seek to show unusual spheres of influence in the Literature of the American West.

Event: Readings by Dorothy Allison, Christine Granados, Greg Pape
Awarded the 2007 Robert Penn Warren Award for Fiction, Dorothy Allison (author of Bastard Out of Carolina) will read her latest work. Christine Granados (author of Brides and Sinners in El Chuco) will read from her book that was nominated for “Book of the Year” by ForeWord magazine. Montana Poet Laureate, Greg Pape (author American Flamingo) will read his newest poetry.

Event: “Writing on Water,” by Human Nature
"Writing on Water" is a dynamic, collaborative performance using poetry, dance, photography and music. Human Nature Dance Theatre spent nearly a month last fall deep in Grand Canyon, making a film called "DanceDownRiver." This year for the BookFest, HNDT will bring dances, poems, and photographs from the Colorado River to the Orpheum Theatre, along with live music. "Writing on Water" is an experimental exercise in cross-pollinating genres to create a layered performance. Movement has sprung out of poems, and new poems have risen from observing these dances.

Event: Readings by Lois Roma-Deeley, Erec Toso, Miles Waggener
Acclaimed poet, Lois Roma-Deeley (author of northSight) will read her latest work. Erec Toso (author of Zero at the Bone) will read from his book about a near death experience after being bitten by a rattlesnake. Miles Waggener will read a lyric essay, his new poems, and selected translations from Spanish Poet Jaime Siles' book of poems Himnos Tardíos/Belated Hymns.

Event:Poetry by Megan Buchanan, Non-fiction by Anne Minard, and Ekkehart Malotki presents The Archaic Rock Art Traditions of Arizona
Megan Buchanan, whose recent work has appeared in Sun: A Magazine of Ideas, will read her poetry. Anne Minard (author of Pluto and Beyond) will read from her new collection of essays about her clumsy, eye-opening acclimation to Southern culture. Ekkehart Malotki will present his show, The Archaic Rock Art Traditions of Arizona.

Event: Christopher Lane and the NORAZ Poets
Christopher Lane and others will read their writing and discuss their work promoting Literacy in high schools and poetry memorization work with Alzheimer’s patients. NORAZ Poets is a collection of poets and poetry lovers celebrating the oral tradition of poetry. Through programs such as Young Voices Be Heard and the Alzheimer's Poetry Project, people are able to understand better the palpable effects poetry has on all of us. NORAZ Poets will be presenting examples of both programs.

Sean Carswell has had a story or essay appear in at least one newspaper, magazine, or journal every month for the last decade. He will read from his newest novel, Train Wreck Girl. Award winning poet, Jill Divine will read poems from her recently published collection, Game. National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, Tim Seibles (author of Buffalo Head Solos) will read his latest work.

As part of Bookmans sponsorship of the Northern Arizona Book Festival, author Evan Handler, the actor best known as Harry Goldenblatt from HBO’s Sex and the City and the author of the critically acclaimed memoir Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, will be reading his original work in the Bookman’s cafe. Handler currently co-stars in Showtime’s hit series Californication co-starring David Duchovny.

Event: Reading by Gary Nabhan
Gary Paul Nabhan, Ph.D., is a writer, lecturer and world-renowned conservation scientist. He is the outgoing Director of the Center for Sustainable Environments at Northern Arizona University, where he catalyzed the Canyon Country Fresh regional food initiative on the Colorado Plateau. In his last lecture before moving from Flagstaff to Tucson, Nabhan will speak on his work on the Colorado Plateau and read from his newest works, Arab/American: Landscape, Culture, and Cuisine in Two Great Deserts (2008) and Renewing America's Food Traditions: Saving and Savoring the Continent's Most Endangered Foods (2008).
